It's Caturday!

The kittens are now 4 weeks old and are getting so big! This little guy is the most advanced of the group, and has moved on to eating solid foods. Here he's eating kitten milk replacement out of a spoon, but he's also been getting into his mother's food bowl!

Unfortunately though, one of the little kittens, Cordelia, has developed an infected abscess on her backside. We took her to get it checked on on Thursday, and the doctor opened it up (eww!) and gave her some meds, but we took her again today to get her checked, and it's gotten worse. She needs to get it surgically removed on Monday. No idea why the poor little thing has it to begin with, but I hope she can recover with no serious problems ;(

Shopping at Old Navy's One Day Wonder Sale

I went nuts for these crochet cardigans when I saw them in the Old Navy store a few weeks ago. They're so cute and versatile - but they weren't on sale, and at $22.94, I wasn't feeling it. So I was quite happy when I heard that last Saturday they were having a One Day Wonder sale where all their cropped cardigans were only $8! I came armed with a $10 off $50 coupon (printable from their Facebook page) and this neato thing too:

I'm a member of Crowdtap, another word-of-mouth marketing-type site where you answer polls, give brands feedback, and sometimes get free samples. (If you'd like to join, click here, it's free of course!) Old Navy had an excellent promotion and selected people to receive free spring dresses, you got one coupon for you, and 3 to share with friends!

Unfortunately the spring dresses weren't all I was expecting - most of them were cute, but ill-fitting. Too boxy, too long, too flimsy, weird proportions, etc. I tried on tons before I settled on a dress I liked, which is nice but it wasn't something I would have purchased if I didn't have the coupon. It's a shift dress in white eyelet lace, a little retro, a little shapeless, but will hopefully be cute for warmer weather.

I ended up getting the cardigans in 4 colors because I just couldn't decide! I covered all the basics with  black, white, and a grayish-brown, and then got the peach one since I need more color in my life. They're cute over sundresses or t-shirts, so I hope to get a lot of use out of them.

I also picked up an embellished t-shirt which I had been eyeing and was finally on sale, as well as a cute linen skirt in army green. I have the same style of skirt in khaki which I wore all the time last summer, it's so comfy and cute!

Price breakdown!

Crochet cardigans - normally $22.94 - $8 (x4)
White dress - normally $34.50 - free!
Embellished t-shirt - normally $17.94 - $10
Skirt - normally $24.50 - $9.99

Items' retail total: $168.70
After sale total: $51.99
Minus $10 coupon, final price paid: $41.99

So I saved about 75% , and paid less than $6 per item!

It's Caturday!

The kittens are three weeks old now! Their ears are up, they can stand and walk around, and they are suuuuper cute!

Have a great weekend, and a happy Easter if you celebrate!

Easter event at LUSH!

I once again found myself at the mall yesterday (for Old Navy's one-day wonder sale - more on that later) and decided to peek in LUSH after seeing the store employees with bunny ears on. They were having an Easter event, which involved cookies, a raffle for a gift set, and they had hidden Easter eggs around the shop! Inside the eggs were samples of their products. Mom and I each got one (shown above) sample pot of shampoo - Cynthia Sylvia Stout and Curly Wurly. What fun!

They also started selling this "Rising Sun" charity soap. I had seen it on the UK LUSH website but they just released it here (wasn't in the shop last weekend!). 100% of the proceeds of the $5.95 soap go to Peace Boat, a Japan-based charity working to provide aid in the aftermath of the earthquake. I don't usually use soap, but this stuff smells SO good (cherry-almond, like those Italian cookies with the cherry in the middle!) and it's for a great cause, so I snatched it up!

Pledge to be more eco-friendly and get free stuff from soap.com!

Soap.com is having a cool little promotion for Earth Day. They teamed up with Bolder (actbolder.com) which awards you for making pledges. They have 9 eco-friendly pledges available, with rewards like $10 in free Seventh Generation products, a free 4-pack of Scott Natural paper towels, and $2 off Aveeno Active Naturals products. The full list is here: Bolder - Soap.com Challenges

When you fill out a short (under 140 characters) response, they email you a coupon code that you can use on the site. You can use as many as you want at one time - right now I have a cart full of free stuff! One glitch though - the $10 off Seventh Generation products coupon should be off multiple items, but it only takes $10 off one item. It also doesn't work on their Earth Day special bundle. So you can choose an item at or over $10 (I'm getting the paper towels for free) or lose some value off the coupon. They have 15% off Seventh Generation items, so everything is cheaper than usual!

Soap.com gives you free shipping at $39, and your free items count towards the cart total. You can pay shipping on the free items, or shop for other things while you're at it - there are tons of cheap beauty and household products available, with sales and coupons available. I had no problem getting to $39 with stuff I've been wanting to buy!

They also have a neat referral program - if you've never shopped there before, enter my referral code KN084036 at checkout, and you'll get 20% off your order! If you placed an order before, you won't get the discount, but the code MYSOAP2 will also get you 20% off if it's your second order. I'm not sure if it will work if you've made 2 or more orders in the past.

It's Caturday!

This past Thursday was The Fluff's birthday, she's now 2 years old! I rarely know my cats' birthdays because they're rescues, but Fluffy's birthday was listed on her adoption papers so I make a point of remembering it!

And Willow's babies are now 2 weeks old! They're growing at an alarming rate - all their eyes are open, they can stand and stumble around, and some are even purring! According to kitten growth and development sites, they already passed 3 week old milestones before they turned 2 weeks!

This week is spring break for me so I get lots of kitty love! Have a great weekend (and week if you're off too!)

Freebies and fun from the LUSH pinata event!

My friend and I were at the mall this past weekend and stopped in at LUSH on a whim. Although I love the idea of any fresh, handmade skincare product, I've always been oddly afraid to go into the LUSH store because it felt like some secret society I didn't know the rules to. Of course I was totally wrong and the ladies who worked there were super nice! They were having an event to celebrate the release of a limited edition bath bomb called "Donkey Oaty", with a giveaway of said product. They also informed us that they were going to be opening a pinata filled with freebies at 4:00 on the dot, so we said we'd return again at 4.

One thing leads to another and it's 3:58 and we're sprinting down the halls of the mall to get to the store in time. I guess their clocks were fast because we skidded into the store with seconds to spare before 4:00 and we see them picking up the carcass of the pinata off the floor and a handful of people were excitedly looking at all the stuff they got. You can imagine our collective "Nooooooooooooooooo!" when we realized we missed our chance at freebies.

Amazingly though, there was a kind soul who had collected a basketful of free stuff, and offered us both a bunch of things she collected. Thank you, super nice LUSH shopper!! I ended up with (shown in the above photo) 2 bars of soap and a "Party On" temple balm - a kind of relaxing aromatherapy balm. The LUSH employee I asked said the soap is ginger soap available only in the UK right now!

My friend had heard a lot about the Aqua Marina cleanser and asked for a sample, so I got one too. It has calamine and aloe vera to calm irritated skin and kaolin for deep cleansing. I've never used their products before so I'm excited to try all this new stuff!

The two little white containers in the photo were from Origins recycling program. I always bring an empty cosmetics product (and I have tons!) with me when I go to Origins, and they usually have a sample-size of something available. This time they were out of prepackaged samples, so they made me up ones of my choice. I picked some "A Perfect World" moisturizer with SPF and "Clean Energy" makeup removing oil.

Gotta love free stuff! :)

Free sample of Garnier Pure Clean plus coupon!

Garnier has a new line of eco-friendly hair products called Pure Clean - they contain no dyes, silicones or parabens, and are biodegradable! The bottles are also 100% recyclable and are made of 50% recycled plastic. You can get a free sample of the shampoo and conditioner on their Facebook page, like them and then scroll down to where you see the above image and click "get my free sample".

They also have a printable coupon on their official website if you'd rather just buy the stuff!

Review: L'Oreal Double Extend Eye Illuminator Mascara

L'Oreal Double Extend Eye Illuminator Mascara in Black Quartz (for brown eyes)

Price: MSRP $10.95

Claims: "Black mascara infused with a hint of color adds volume and length to lashes while intensifying eyes. The illuminating top coat infused with light-reflecting pearls highlights your eye color with our exclusive sphere tip brush. Clump-free & Flake and Smudge Resistant."

Review: I received this product to review for free through the social marketing site BzzAgent.

This mascara has two ends: a black mascara for volumizing and lengthening, and a top coat to highlight your eyes. The basic black mascara is nice, goes on easily with no clumping or mess. It lengthens but doesn't provide much volume, which is fine because I have a lot of lashes already.

Black mascara, one coat on top lashes only:

The top coat says it has "light-reflecting pearls" but it's really just copper-colored glitter. Not even finely ground subtle illuminating glitter, but big ol' chunks of the stuff. One application of the top coat leaves a large number of the glitter particles, which feel is a little over-the-top for daily use. I ended up using an eyelash comb to get some of the glitter off. Throughout the day, the glitter particles would catch light and I'd see weird flashes out of the corner of my eyes.

Top coat brush:

Mascara (top lashes only) with illuminating top coat (top and bottom lashes):

I don't feel like the glitter is subtle or illuminating to my eye color at all - it's just very obviously glitter. There's nothing wrong with glitter, but based on the claims, you'd think it would be more fine and subtle, not over-the-top sparkly. I think it would make a fun look for wearing out at night, but not something I'd wear very often, especially not to work.

All in all, it's a good overall mascara, and I like the idea of two looks in one. The mascara seems to hold the curl throughout the day, but I was disappointed to see a few black flakes on my cheeks at the end of the day the first time I used it. Since wearing it without the top coat, it hasn't flaked, so that might be the problem. I'll continue using it, but I don't see myself paying nearly $11 for this product when I have found other (cheaper) mascaras that I like better.

Overall rating: B-

Would purchase again? Probably not

Did you get your Target Beauty Bag?

At the beginning of March, Target had an offer for a free beauty bag full of samples. I received mine a few days ago! It's fantastic that everything was free!

The cosmetics bag is by Sonia Kashuk, who sells her makeup line at Target. It's a really high quality, lightly padded zipper case that normally costs $5.99.

Inside is:
  • A coupon book with $25 worth of coupons for beauty brands included in the bag, as well as Olay, Maybelline, Burt's Bees and tons more
  • A travel-sized bottle of Pantene Color-Preserve shampoo
  • A travel-sized bottle of Nivea Express Hydration body lotion
  • A one-use sample of Revlon Colorburst lipgloss
  • A sample size packet of Fekkai Shea Butter Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner
  • A full-sized tube of Neutrogena naturals lip balm!! (I'm most excited about this!)
I thought the bags might differ but from other bloggers' reports, they all seem to be the same. Either way, kudos to Target for having such an awesome freebie!

It's Caturday!

And we have KITTENS! Willow gave birth yesterday while everyone was at work, what a surprise when we came home! As you can see, there are 3 little gray ones like her (although I'm not sure if they're all gray tabbies, one might be solid!), a patched dilute calico, and the little black-on-white baby!

They are so cute and Willow's such a good mommy! Kitty love! <3

L'Oreal products!

I was shocked to receive this package of makeup the other day from BzzAgent! I'd filled out a screener weeks ago and immediately forgot, so I didn't expect to get cool stuff in the mail! BzzAgent is a community where you get to sample things and spread the word about it. Up until now I've received small things like a Redbox rental code, or free note cards from Expressionery - but this is right up my alley and super exciting! :)

In the package was L'Oreal's "The One Sweep" eye shadow and "Double Extend Eye Illuminator" mascara, both formulated for brown eyes. The One Sweep eye shadow has an extra-large brush that's supposed to be like 3 eyeshadow steps in one. The Double Extend mascara is double-ended - one side is black mascara, and the other side is a top coat colored to illuminate your eyes based on your eye color.

I haven't gotten around to trying either product, but I will post about it again when I do! If you're interested in joining BzzAgent, leave me a comment with your email address and I will send you an invite (it's invite-only).
